History
In June of 2000 Ray of Hope launched a new and innovative program in downtown Kitchener. The Morning Glory Café and Bakery is a business venture designed to teach practical skills and positive work habits to those who have experienced long-term difficulty obtaining and maintaining employment. Over a six-month period, the program addresses a combination of work related issues and other important life skills.
When Ray of Hope purchased Oasis Drop-in Centre in 1997, a building containing 254 to 262 King Street East in downtown Kitchener was also acquired as part of the same property. The building was in poor condition and many believed that the location was not suitable for a new business venture.
Ray of Hope has a strong desire not only to play a role in the transformation of individual lives, but to be a community leader in the revitalization of the much-criticized east end of downtown Kitchener. With major renovation and a significant fundraising campaign the downstairs portion of the building was renovated into a clean, friendly and stylish café and bakery.
At the same time we engaged the expertise of others, most notably leaders from Opportunities Waterloo Region to assist us in the development of a program that would effectively meet the needs of the chronically unemployed.
The Morning Glory Café and Bakery employment training program is funded through the kind donations of individuals, churches, and businesses in our community. Café sales cover general business expenses.
